These are images that for me deal with the notions of religion and sexuality. The text illuminates the relationship between abusive lovers, bit can also be related, I feel, to God.
Masochists collect upon their body the bruises given to them by their loved ones. They receive scars, grazes, they mark themselves for their keepers, much like those who dedicate their life to prayer do. We see images of emaciated priests, fasting for huge periods of time in emmulation of their saviour. There are nuns who have been brought up in the church who have never even seen their own body, who even bathe in a robe.
Much like the sexual masochist, they feel that their body is not their own. They belong to a higher authority.
